It's easy to forget that unlike you (who is [hopefully] buckled up while driving!), your dog is most likely calmly sitting or sleeping on the seat next to you, or maybe even on your lap with their head hanging out the window.

Dog & Vehicle Safety: "Rules of the Road"

     1. NEVER let your dog ride on your lap while in the car!

Why: If you were to get in an accident, your dog would be pinned

between you and the airbag/steering wheel.)

     2. NEVER let your dog ride in the front seat, even if they are buckled in!

Why:  Airbags are designed for the safety of people and not to the

specifications which would be favorable or helpful to

our canine counterparts in the event of a car accident.

     3. NEVER let your dog freely roam in your car while driving!

Why: Most dogs can become very excited or anxious while going for

a ride in the car. An unruly, antsy pooch is incredibly

distracting which, in turn, can be extremely dangerous to

those of you riding in the car, and also other drivers, bicylists,

or pedestrians on or in the road. Your attention should always

be on the road, not on your dog.
      4. Always buckle your dog in using a car safety harness in the back seat!

Why: Car harnesses are designed with a dog's safety needs in mind!

They keep your dog safe, secure, and happy so both of you can

safely get to where you are going without worry.

Heat Stroke

 Symptoms:
- Rapid, frantic, noisy breathing
- Bright red tongue & gums
- Thick & tenacious saliva
- Frequent Vomitting
- High rectal temp (106*F +)

If the condition is allowed to go unchecked, the dog becomes unsteady, staggers, has diarrhea (often bloody), and becomes progressively weaker. Coma and death ensue.

Treatment: ACT QUICKLY!!!
If Mild... move the dog to a cooler surrounding such as an air conditioned building or car

If over 104*F or unsteady on feet... cool the dog by placing it in a tub of cold water. If this is not feasible, wet your dog down with a garden hose

If over 106*F... give a cold water enema. A more rapid temperature drop is imperative at this point. Cool to a rectal temp of 103*F and get your dog to a vet for further assistance!

Swimming Pool Safety

Many dogs enjoy swimming as much as people do, and cool times in the local swimming spot or backyard pool are one of the best parts of summer. But you have to look out for your pet around water, since even the strongest, most enthusiastic swimmers can get into trouble.
No dog should be given unsupervised access to a backyard pool or a neighborhood pond or creek. Swimming pools are best fenced off for safety. And if that's not possible, they should be equipped with alarms that sound when the surface of the water is broken by a child or pet falling in.

Prevention also includes teaching your pet what to do when he's in the pool. Dogs don't get the idea that the steps are on one side only, and they may tire and drown trying to crawl out the side. If your pet likes to swim, work with him in the pool to help him learn where the steps are so he can get out easily.

 Natural Flea & Tick Prevention

The commonly used chemical based products used in over the counter and veterinary perscribed flea and tick collars or spray and even topical drops deterants have been found that in large enough doses can cause breathing problems, tremors, vomiting, skin irritations, permanent nerve damage and death. Some dogs experience hair loss and sores around the neck from flea collars on where the topical drops have been applied, plus the chemical fumes given off by these products can negatively affect everyone in the house.
Did you know that your dog's liver and kidneys are adversely affected by the use of commercial flea products such as frontline and advantage, chemical de-wormers and even heartworm drugs? The toxic chemicals in these products will eventually result in renal failure (kidney failure), liver damage to the point of the liver becoming unable to filter the blood and complete liver failure. Contaminated blood circulating throughout the body day after day will most definitely contribute to other more complicated health issues, such as diabetes and arthritis to name two of the most common long term side effects.

These toxic drugs can also cause severe skin rashes, loss of hair, epileptic seizures, or brain damage. The list of adverse side effects amazingly goes on and on. Still people continue to use these drugs because they don't know there is a better, simpler, less expensive, safer way. (www.thewholedog.com)
